John Buxton

John Buxton brings a unique blend of technical expertise, practitioner management experience, and facilitation excellence to Windward Project Management. Mr. Buxton is a licensed professional engineer who understands the technical components of a project. In addition, multiple degrees in management and business administration broaden his scope of expertise to encompass the strategic and financial components of project management. Combining both professions, Mr. Buxton provides instruction, facilitation, and advisory support for project planning, project risk assessments and strategies, project implementation, monitoring and status reporting, troubled project recovery, and earned value management.

Over the past 30 years, Mr. Buxton has provided management and consulting services for both domestic and international clients in multiple industries and government agencies. In recent years, Mr. Buxton has delivered project management seminars and training sessions in over 30 countries. He has served as a draft reviewer and contributor for the Project Management Institute’s A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) – Fourth Edition, 2008.

Mr. Buxton is a retired United States Air Force officer. He was a member of the International Staff, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force. In this position, he assessed the capabilities and facilities of foreign companies relative to current U.S. technology programs for the purpose of potential joint projects with the Air Force and private industries. Previous to this assignment, Mr. Buxton led a team of management effectiveness inspectors who evaluated the procedures of contractor program management offices.

As a project manager in the Air Force, Mr. Buxton had responsibility for all aspects of the facilities construction portion of the $3.8 billion Saudi Arabian Command, Control and Communications System program. This was a highly visible and political contract that had extremely critical and sensitive schedule constraints. Mr. Buxton also served as the chief of the Program Evaluation Division for contractor performance on the Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft. In this capacity, he was responsible for the Earned Value oversight of over $2 billion of U.S., NATO, and Saudi Arabian contracts. Before these management assignments, Mr. Buxton was a faculty member at the United States Air Force Academy in both the Aeronautical Engineering and Management Departments.

Mr. Buxton founded Windward Project Management LLC to provide project managers and team members with a learning experience that can be directly applied in the workplace and to create an instructional environment that allows real project issues to be addressed.
